There are approximately more than 40 million people around the world who live with type 1 diabetes (T1D). A large proportion of people with type 1 diabetes live in places with inadequate healthcare, which means there are likely hundreds of thousands of people (or more) facing death due to lack of insulin.

T1International is a nonprofit led by people with and impacted by type 1 diabetes for people with T1D. They believe in a world where everyone with type 1 diabetes – no matter where they live – has everything they need to survive and achieve their dreams.

T1International supports local communities by giving them the tools they need to stand up for their rights so that access to insulin and diabetes supplies becomes a reality for all.

Here are some shocking facts those with type one diabetes (T1D) around the world face:

  • 50% of people around the world in need of insulin cannot reliably access it because it is unavailable, unaffordable, or both (2015)[1]
  • The average annual per-patient cost of insulin in the USA has increased from $231 to $736 in the last 10 years (2016)[2]
  • In Syria, up to 77% of income can be spent on diabetes supplies (2016)[3]
  • Monthly costs for T1D supplies in Brazil can be as much as $700, or 82% of a person’s income (2016)3
  • In the USA, discontinuation of insulin use was the leading cause of life-threatening diabetic ketoacidosis in 68% of people in US inner cities (2011)[4]
  • The life expectancy for a child with T1D in rural Mozambique was estimated to be less than 8 months (2005)[5]

T1International makes lasting change in four ways:

Sharing Knowledge – Their website is a hub for key information and resources related to T1D.

Sharing Data – They work toward a higher standard of research, data and statistics about issues faced by those with T1D.

Campaigning – T1International campaigns for systemic and sustainable change for those with T1D around the world.

Raising Awareness – They share the stories of those living with T1D around the world to raise awareness of the severity of the issues.

T1International does not accept money from pharmaceutical companies or any other entity that they feel might influence their ability to speak out freely on behalf of those with T1D around the world.

For as little as $1 you can help bring life-saving insulin and other critical supplies to those who otherwise could not afford them.
